I received my B.A. in English from Vanderbilt University in 1994 and M.S.W. from the Brown School at Washington University in 2001. With over 17 years of experience in the particular field of death, dying, home hospice care, and grief, I am experienced with different grieving needs – both after a long term illness and after a traumatic/sudden loss.
Most recently, I was honored to give a TEDx talk at Vanderbilt University in November 2019. Linked here: https://www.ted.com/talks/katy_friedman_miller_scared_to_death_and_showing_up_anyway_the_heroism_of_being_there_with_grief_and_grievers
Additionally, I’ve guest lectured at Washington University, Fontbonne University, St. Louis University and St. Louis Community College at Meramec and assisted the teaching of Spirituality and Social Work at Washington University’s Brown School. I’ve provided professional training to therapists and mental health professionals who would like to use humor and play to enhance their work in grief and loss.
My blogs and essays are featured on Medium (www.medium.com) and may be found under my name. I am also proud to be a published poet and writer, with work in a number of publications including Pleiades, Natural Bridge, The Nashville Review, The American Journal of Nursing and I am a periodic guest columnist in my local paper.
